Join Resurrection U.M.C. for the Lenten Season
The Christian season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. During the Ash Wednesday service, worshippers are marked with ashes as a sign of penitence and mortality. Ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made by burning the palm branches that were blessed on the previous Palm Sunday. The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year, but it is always six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. For Western Christian churches it marks the beginning of Lent. Lent represents the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness overcoming temptation by Satan. Lent is our time to prepare ourselves spiritually for the remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The ashes on our foreheads are a symbol of repentance as we recognize our sinfulness and seek God’s forgiveness. It is also a reminder that we all come from dust, and to dust we all will return. For Christians, the marking on the forehead with ashes marks our commitment as disciples, and symbolizes that through Christ's death and resurrection, all Christians can be free from sin.
Many faithful disciples during the season of Lent give something up (fasting in some way) or take on a new spiritual practice to grow in their relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.
May God bless your path during this season of Lent as you
